PODIUM FOR SPENCER IN THE DEFONCE

PODIUM FOR SPENCER IN THE DEFONCE

It was a fantastic weekend for Fibrax Wrexham cycling club as the team headed down to South Wales for the L’etape De La Defonce.  The 2 day, 3 stage race is a highly competitive annual event with a 7mile Team time trial and 2 technical hilly road races.

The Fibrax Wrexham team, featuring David Spencer, Nick Giles, Rob McDonald and David Williams finished an impressive 4th place in stage 1’s Team time trial only a handful of seconds down on Team leaders of the day GS Strada CC.  Stage 2 featured a 57 mile road race in which Fibrax Wexham’s David Spencer read the race with great precision and finished a fantastic 2nd place making him 4th place overall on General Classification and only 10 seconds behind the yellow jersey with only one stage left.  Stage 3 saw the peloton breaking up into bunches due to its hilly nature but Spencer still managed to dig deep and finish 7th in the bunch sprint and therefore promoting him up to 3rd place overall on General classification a fantastic achievement for him and just 19 seconds behind Phil Molison of Kingston Wheelers.

Due to also strong finishes overall by Spencer’s teamates, Fibrax Wrexham RC managed to finish 4th team overall in the Team Classification, which was the highest placed Welsh team.

Also at the weekend, the Endurance junkies took there place in the National Championship Merseyside Wheelers 24 hour time trial.  Fibrax Wrexham had 2 competitors in this incredibly gruelling event over the Shropshire and Cheshire roads.  Ben Amesbury decided to take on the 24 hour event for the first time ever and finished with a really impressive 341 miles and veteran to the 24 hour event Roger Squire completed it in 391miles absolute incredible achievements by both.  Winner of the day was Ultan Coyle from pro team Rapha Condor, who completed the 24 hours in a fantastic 489 miles.
